On April 1, 2016, Chris Purkea released Back in the Ring. She left her home base of Portland, OR and embarked on a tour with her band that found them crisscrossing the United States and Europe playing over 70 shows in less than a year. Now, one year later, Chris is heading out for a string of U.S. tour dates to celebrate the upcoming April 2017 release of her new live CD / DVD combo, which was recorded during the Back in the Ring release tour at Jammin Java in Vienna, VA.

Chris’s elegant emotionality as a vocalist, and her flair and immediacy as a lyricist have garnered her favorable comparisons to Gillian Welch, Ryan Adams, Bruce Springsteen, and Patty Griffin. She’s earned accolades from such distinguished taste-making outlets as The New York Times, Paste, Magnet, Billboard.com, and The AllMusic Guide. She’s shared the stage with such diverse and esteemed artists as Dar Williams, The Lumineers, The Cowboy Junkies, Gregory Alan Isakov, Martin Sexton, and Ani DiFranco. Along the way, Chris has remained fiercely independent, selling over 50,000 albums through her own label, Sad Rabbit Records.
Magnolia Project
Magnolia Still is rooted in celebrating bluegrass tradition and legend and committed to creating music that upholds craftsmanship, celebrates respect and life, and serves to foster connection to ourselves, to each other and to the larger community. We celebrate the gifts each band member brings to the music as well as the wisdom, energy, and spirit of our audience. We strive to find the areas where our voices, talents, and needs intersect and create a cohesive whole. The sound is made up of guitar, banjo, fiddle, upright bass, washboard, and rich 3 part harmonies.
The Raleigh-Durham based band includes Meg Hamilton (lead vocals and washboard), Sarah Dunsmore (vocals and guitar), Caroline Venters (vocals and banjo), Cora Beth Lanier (fiddle), and Phil Lanier (bass, guitar, mandolin, vocals).

Magnolia Still began playing together in October 2014 when Caroline met Meg and Sarah at a bluegrass jam at The Hive in downtown Raleigh. A few months later, Phil and Cora Beth joined in for a few shows and immediately meshed with the trio, deepening the sound and adding a new layer of complexity. The group has played as a 5-piece band since.

Magnolia Still places new twists on old favorites and makes new songs sound and feel traditional. In their music you'll hear powerful vocals, fresh instrumentation, old time and contemporary sounds, unique originals, and spirit and soul with roots deep in bluegrass and classical traditions.
