Spend enough time in Carrboro, N.C., and you’ll notice the small town’s large number of indie rock lifers. The charming burg boasts a varied and vital community of 30- and 40-somethings long embedded in the local scene; this is a great and admirable thing, resulting in bands that resolutely pursue their respective visions with little care as to who might hear it apart from their neighbors. But the most exciting thing about Carrboro’s veteran musicians is that they are incredibly willing to work with their younger peers. For proof, look no further than Midnight Plus One, an exciting new outfit that attacks dense distortion with pile-driving momentum.

John Bowman and Pete Wagner have both been bouncing around the Triangle scene for the better part of a decade. Bowman might be known best as one of the exuberant MCs that fronted Kerbloki, a rap-rock group brought to crushing life by the rhythm section that now powers local heavies Caltrop. Wagner was long a key cog in Auxes, a jagged and often jubilant post-punk band.

Both anxious to start a new project, they teamed up, with Bowman on drums and Wagner on guitar. Wagner roped in Nick Senese to play guitar; Tre Acklin—a hot young commodity around the Triangle, currently adding vicious distortion to Airstrip’s nightmare pop and a muscular throb to Gross Ghost’s kinetic shimmers—joined on bass, while Americans in France drummer Casey Cook added her sardonic, Kim Gordon-esque coo.

Midnight plans to self-release an LP this summer, but a four-track Bandcamp sampler provides an early glimpse. “Catacombs” rumbles to life with burly bass, as guitars offer jagged thrums and Cook whispers like a dark spirit on the wind. It’s an apt setup for the twisting surge that follows. “Knives on the Beach” finds Midnight at their most textured. Guitars and bass tangle purposefully, building distortion that’s diffused during a monolithic bridge but resurrected with equal patience.

Tapped into indie rock’s roots, Midnight Plus One is still hungry for new ideas and approaches—a welcome antidote for outfits fattened on nostalgia. —Jordan Lawrence
