Untethered to the stage, What Cheer's raucous
live shows explode the relationship between performer
and audience while proving that loud, fun music
doesn't require electricity. And mobility means they can
play anywhere you want them to.
Their sound is an aggressive mix of Bollywood,
The Balkans, Klezmer, New Orleans, and Samba
played with the intensity of metal. Equally at home in
sweaty clubs, concert halls, parties, festival fi elds, and
community events, What Cheer defi es categorization,
appealing to old and young from all walks of life.

Batala Durham
Batala Durham
Batala Durham is the newest branch of Batala, an international samba reggae music project based in Salvador de Bahia in northeastern Brazil. The name Batala is a combination of the phrase “bateu lá” meaning “hit there” in Portuguese and Obatalá (Oxalá), the Candomblé deity who is the father of the Orixas and of all humanity.

Batala was founded in Paris in 1997 by Giba Gonçalves, a Bahian percussionist with links to Ilê Aiyê, Olodum, Muzenza, Male Debale, Jimmy Cliff, Tupi Nago, and Kaoma. Batala currently has over 30 groups in 15 countries and a worldwide membership of over 1,000 percussionists.

Led by another Bahia native- Caique Vidal- Batala Durham consists of roughly 20 percussionist from around the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area.
