Party Illegal Presents: Playplay's EP Release Party!
Party Illegal Presents: Playplay's EP Release Party!
PlayPlay & Party Illegal both return for a special 'It's Only 3am' EP release party featuring performances from ZenSoFly as well as Party Illegal crew Queen Plz, Treee City, & PlayPlay.

PlayPlay has been DJ'ing for close to a decade, and their goal has always been to keep people dancing. With their debut EP 'It's Only 3am' (out on Knightwerk Records Jan 29th), PlayPlay stays true to their mission, while also envisioning a nihilistic queer takeover of dancefloors worldwide. Creating an acid-tinged battlecry for freaks, PlayPlay unites their 90s raver nostalgia with their love for Baltimore club in the three track EP.

PlayPlay
PlayPlay (Knightwerk/ Heavy) is a NYC-based, NC-raised DJ, producer, teacher, and music scholar. In January, they debuted their club EP release “It’s Only 3am” on Knightwerk Records, and have since released music on labels such as Worst Behavior and Cybersonic LA. As both a DJ and producer, PlayPlay combines their penchant for percussion (particularly breaks) and heavy bass with nostalgic hip-hop and house samples. Their music is inspired by what they grew up listening to - namely jungle, DnB, breakbeat hardcore, Baltimore club, industrial, jock jams, 90s club anthems and hard house. Using a combination of samples and hardware synthesizers to create everything from unearthly basslines to high-octane acid/industrial sounds, PlayPlay makes energetic music that is both familiar and hard to pin down. While PlayPlay has been DJing for over a decade now, their ultimate goal is still simply to be in constant musical conversation with everyone on the dancefloor, connecting through shared nostalgia, bass and sweat.

PlayPlay is also a music scholar and activist interested in local music scenes, dance floor dynamics, queer theory, and media studies. They have been teaching DJing and music production for several years, most recently through the UNC-Chapel Hill Music Department and Building Beats. With a particular investment in mentoring women and gender non-conforming DJs / producers, PlayPlay has held workshops at festivals such as Moogfest, for organizations such as Girls Rock NC, and at various colleges & universities. PlayPlay is currently an artist-in-residence at Flux Factory, a Queens-based gallery, where they are working on a soundscape installation focusing on queer resilience in club music.
Queen Plz (Illegal)
Queen Plz (Illegal)
Queen Plz is a scientist, a feminist, a dirty south enthusiast. Her art is inseparable from her politics, and her DJ sets will take you on a meandering journey from the rapid fire of the New York ballroom scene to the slow southern drawl of UGK. She aims to move you, in one way or another, so close your eyes, drop your inhibitions, and follow the night where it leads you."

Queen Plz has been throwing parties in the triangle area for almost five years. She is one of the original founders and resident djs of the monthly Illegal parties at The Pinhook in Durham, as well as holding it down for the queer party scene on a regular basis. She has opened for Jubilee, Lief, Mykki Blanco, TT the Artist, and Mighty Mark.

Her mixtape "First Amendment Area" is a recent winner of the "Bull City in The Mix" local mixtape competition.
Treee City
Treee City
Party Illegal resident and host Treee City returns to The Pinhook with his signature eclectic blend of bass, house, beats, and whatever has washed up on the shores of the internet. From original tracks and remixes to the hardest-grooving sounds of the future, every selection is lovingly hand-picked to turn you up.
ZenSoFly
ZenSoFly
ZenSoFly is a hypnotic rapper hailed by the Indy Week as the "Upstart Raleigh club charmer and image guru.” She is celebrated by some as the “mayor” of the city’s new music identity; a thunderous performer of playfully buoyant music.
