For over seven years Berklee trained guitarist and songwriter John Westmoreland has been a cornerstone of NC’s Diali Cissokho & Kaira Ba, who continue to wow audiences in the states and across the Atlantic in Senegal with their fiery brand of West-African Griot Fusion. Now John’s gearing up to release a debut album of his own original songs with a new project, Westmoreland… A group that was born in the studio while recording the forthcoming album “Cast Fire.” Without a single rehearsal the soon to be band mates showed up at Mitch Easter’s Fidelitorium and got to work under the guidance and direction of engineer/producer/magician extraordinaire Jason Richmond. The results are pure alchemy. Building around John’s masterful guitar playing and Leonard Cohen like voice the other band members have added further depths of color and texture to his compositions. Drummer Kobie Watkins who has recorded and toured with Jazz giants such as Sonny Rollins, Jim Hall, Brandford Marsalis, and John Scofield provides a rhythmic foundation that ranges from intricate delicate touches to heavy hitting grooves. Combined with Bassist Lance Scott, a pillar in Durham’s Jazz and Gospel scene, they provide the heart beat of Westmoreland. Winston-Salem’s Kevin Timmons joins the ensemble on Piano, Organ, Moog and an array of synthesizers creating ocean like pads of sound and haunting melodies. This quartet of seasoned musicians stretches the boundaries and blurs the lines between genres such as Folk, World, Rock, Indie, and Jazz.

“Cast Fire” is set to be released this Fall and features many notable guest musicians including: Renowned pedal steel guitarist Eric Heywood of Son Volt and Tift Merritt, classical violinist Jennifer Curtis, Diali Cissokho and Will Ridenour on kora(West-African harp), Daniel Chambo on bansuri(Hindustani classical flute), and Alan Thompson on alto saxophone

Gabriel Pelli & Will Ridenour
From Chapel Hill, NC, Gabriel Pelli and Will Ridenour are refining an unprecedented blend of American folk and West African kora music. They met while playing music for the renowned Paperhand Puppet Intervention theater troupe, where they first got a taste of what a collaboration could yield. People from all walks of life relate to their cultured songs that spark images of love and remembrance, beauty and resistance, passion and strength.

Gabriel Pelli brings an indie rock and jazz background to the group from his work and touring with The Old Ceremony and the Squirrel Nut Zippers. He also has a passion for folk and old time fiddle, which is an integral part of this band's sound. Will Ridenour has studied the West African harp-lute kora since 1999, and with this collaboration brings his unique and universal style to fruition. He has toured 28 countries worldwide with punk outfit Zegota and dance band Diali Cissokho & Kaira Ba.

Together, they create an uplifting sound with profound capabilities.
